I would agree with David. First let's get the infrastructure up and then we can play 'who's got the best operating system'. Honestly, once that happens the operating system has become a commodity anyway. The question will be who owns the backend infrastructure and that remains to be seen....

I doubt Microsoft are 'running scared' with 88% of the current operating system market with Linux at 0.88% (<a href="http://marketshare.hitslink.com/operating-system-market-share.aspx?qprid=8)" rel="nofollow">http://marketshare.hitslink.com/operating-system-...</a>

Rgds,

Could computing is even older than personal computing so i don't think that should be mentioned as a reason.

I think cloud computing has to be materialized before it can get off the ground. people download because then they have an object that contains the data. If you can convince people the tiny netbooks and smartphones they have in their hands contains the data they poses then cloud computing is on the winning hand.

Another hurdle is the need of a subscription for the data the people own because of the bandwidth they use accessing their data. If you download it you can access it any time you want without paying.

I don't mind a smaller OS but the linux distributions aren't getting smaller either.

Interesting post. This is the first I've heard of MinWin, but I agree that Microsoft are running scared. For a long time, they've had the PC locked up, between their operating system and office suite. But things are changing. I'm just a small time user but I can already appreciate the convenience of the cloud. I have access to my data at home, at work, at a friend's house etc. There are many, many advantages. (Let's not get into the security debate - I, personally, am not talking about super sensitive material here). And once your data is online - i.e. you use webmail, you run Google Docs or equivalent for your applications - all through your web browser, what do you need Windows for? The OS is only the background in which you run your browser, and why would you want a big, bloated, EXPENSIVE operating system, when you can have a nimble, stable, secure, FREE Linux OS. Oh yeah, I'd be worried if I were MS.
